It can be an ongoing challenge for LOTE teachers to motivate boys in their classrooms. Many boys can be disengaged and show little interest in the subject. This leads to difficult behaviour which impacts on entire classes.
The overall focus of this workshop will be on teaching strategies and hands-on activities that can be used to engage boys in LOTE learning. Ideas will be easy to implement,  effective  and  based on  research  in the field.
Day One - Thursday November 17th, 2011
This session will start by looking at the research in the field of boys' education - this will be explained in simple and practical ways that will enable teachers to apply the knowledge immediately upon returning to classrooms. The afternoon will focus on boys in LOTE classrooms specifically - teachers will gain an insight into what boys are thinking and saying about learning languages, and will then have the opportunity to look at what this means for actual classroom teaching and learning.
Day Two  -  Friday  November 18th, 2011
We will bring together all ideas from the previous day in order to develop approaches to planning that will increase boys' engagement in LOTE lessons. Teachers will see (and try out) examples of activities that work successfully with boys, and will have the opportunity to discuss and plan curriculum in ways that motivate boys (whilst also engaging girls). There will be opportunities to develop units of work that are 'boy-friendly' and to create activities that will get boys interested, challenged and learning effectively.
