Flexible learning spaces pose new and exciting possibilities for supporting differentiated learning and addressing individual student needs.  With clever design elements, curriculum developments and integrated technologies better learning outcomes for all students can be achieved.
Integrating speech reinforcement technologies with other ICT creates new teaching and learning activities. It also assists teachers with the pedagogical shift required to make flexible learning environments appealing places for all who teach and learn in them.
Changes to learning space design and shifting pedagogy present new challenges.
Maintaining engagement and access to the learning when the acoustic environment is poor is a concern. New evidenced based oral language programs that focus on speaking and listening skills reinforce the importance of access to speech for the development of literacy and learning.
On completion of this workshop you will have an understanding of easy to implement technologies that facilitate communication in the learning space. You will be informed of a collaboration of strategies, tools and evidence based research and initiatives that support the development of speaking and listening skills.  You will be connected to websites and organizations that support the development of inclusive engaging learning spaces that work.
This workshop will be interactive and involve discussion focused on solution based problem solving.  You will:
* Gain an understanding of what makes speech intelligible and how this impacts engagement,
learning and behaviour.
* Examine evidenced based research on cohorts of students using soundfield technology to
improve learning outcomes
* Examine evidenced based research into the importance of oral language and listening skills in
the development of early literacy
* Gain an understanding of communication devices and infrastructure, how they work in various
designs by exploring a variety of school settings
* Uncover the relationship between lap tops, IPods, soundfield technology, speaking, listening
and literacy
* Understand when, where and how to integrated technologies into everyday student and
teacher centered activities including collaborative learning. Understand how these give students
another modality to access learning and show learning.
Should you have difficulties in managing the acoustic environment of a learning space or wish to develop new strategies for improving communication and engaging kids bring along pictures /plans/ issues/concerns for discussion time.


Leanne Rose-Munro works with integrated technologies that facilitate communication and brings a teaching background. In 2008 she began exploring the impact of poor acoustic environments and the inability of all students to engage in the learning when speech intelligibility is compromised. Leanne worked with educators concerned by stress levels created by noisy environments and how that impacted on curriculum implementation and students with hearing health issues. Leanne is a member of Council of Education Facility Planners International (CEFPI), Learning Difficulties Australia, SPELD Vic.
