Hearing health issues are a hidden learning difficulty in mainstream schools. They inhibit the development of speaking, listening, reading and writing skills and can impact the development of social cuing strategies. When communication is not pleasurable a sense of alienation can be felt. All sorts of behaviors can follow.
On any given day 23% of students have a mild hearing loss. Understanding the impact hearing issues such as Auditory Processing Disorder and Hearing Loss has on the ability to access and engage in the learning environment is paramount to improving learning outcomes for these students.
This workshop is a must for those wanting to make a difference through a collaborative approach to supporting students with hearing health issues.
Topics to be covered include:
* Teaching kids with hearing loss and auditory processing deficits, what technologies and strategies assist mainstream teachers with inclusivity?
* What does the research tell us about indigenous hearing loss?
* What implications does this have for schools teaching indigenous students ?
* What is a whole school approach to supporting kids with hearing health issues?
* How can we reinforce speech in flexible learning spaces and during collaborative activities?
* What does the evidenced based research tell us about student engagement, soundfield technology and learning outcomes for all students?
* How do we integrate technologies to support students with significant hearing loss beyond the learning space?
* Dependence or independence? A collaborative discussion on assisting students with hearing access solutions for schools. A secondary teacher's perspective and what they didn't know but wished they did!
* Understand hearing augmentation technologies and how they work in flexible learning spaces.
* Know the difference between the use and applications of a hearing loop, large area transmitter, Soundfield System, Wall Pilot, Personal FM to support students with hearing aids and cochlear implants. Know how to ensure these are working correctly for the students in your care.

About the Presenter

Leanne Rose-Munro has a teaching background and works with Soundfield Technology as an integrated technology in mainstream education. In 2008 she began to explore the impact of poor acoustic environments and the inability of students to engage in the learning when speech intelligibility is compromised. Leanne works with educators and designers concerned by stress levels created by noisy environments and how that impacts on curriculum implementation and shifting pedagogy. Building and renovating learning spaces that support inclusivity of all those who use the space is an area of growing concern and research that Leanne has now become involved in. Leanne is a member of Council of Education Facility Planners International (CEFPI), Learning Difficulties Australia, SPELD Vic.
