This workshop will cover in detail the theories of Emotional Intelligence and Mindsight as highly effective skills to build into all teaching & learning. There will be a focus on emotions; what they are, how they affect us and how a better  understanding  of  emotions  can  assist  in managing ups and downs and enable students to become more resilient. We know that students who are more socially and emotionally competent, learn more easily and conversely, that the learning of those who are not, suffers. This workshop will address ways to build skills of mindsight and insight in students that will not only enable for better learning but will give them lifelong strategies for coping with possible, stress, fear and anxiety. Resilience is a key component of this workshop as the art of bouncing back requires a robust emotional attitude from our students. There will also be a focus on the fundamental interpersonal relationships that are the  backbone of  all  healthy schools, offering  teachers the  chance to reflect on their own emotional intelligence as a group of professionals. The workshop will also give participants many opportunities to experience mindfulness exercises for themselves.

Monday March 5th, 2012
Day 1 will cover the basics of Mindsight and Emotional Intelligence - an introduction to these theories and why are they critical to helping students enhance their learning.  We will look closely at emotions and consider their purpose and how we can teach as well as learn how to use emotions as guides to our values and become better managers of our emotions. This can be applied to our approach to all teaching and learning. Day 1 will offer the chance to participate in some mindfulness activities that can be applied to the welfare session, the classroom, or the staffroom.
Tuesday March 6th, 2012
Day 2 will focus on the brain science behind mindsight and mindfulness and how we can apply it to what we do in schools to build strong emotional resilience. As professionals we will consider options for incorporating emotionally intelligent approaches to relating to and teaching our students. We will also look closely at the skills of the mindful teacher and how we might strengthen the skills of mindsight in our students. Day 2 will offer the chance to participate in some mindfulness activities that can be applied to the welfare session, the classroom, or the staffroom.

About the Presenter

Clare Barrett is a psychotherapist and educator. Her 15 years as a teacher helped to inform her strong view that the most effective teachers are relational. Clare's Masters Thesis focuses on the essential nature of human relating and draws on the theories of attachment and trauma which inform the way in which humans relate to others and the world in general. Clare's training of teachers is engaging and experiential as she hopes to companion participants to a deeper understanding of student behaviours. She combines some useful evidence based information with reflective, multi-modal inquiries into how we approach our relationships with students. She currently practices as a psychotherapist in the not for profit sector in a very disadvantaged section of society and is also in private practice as a counsellor and consultant to educators and other welfare professionals.
