NAPLAN Numeracy Preparation

Effective NAPLAN preparation is a longterm process that should be the focus of teaching in all year levels. This workshop applies the latest research into NAPLAN preparation to present a four pronged approach to numeracy preparation. The workshop will include: features of NAPLAN standardised tests; strategies to maximise learning as well as test results; teaching students to understand the problem; and analysing your school's NAPLAN results.

About the Presenter

Lyn Carter has fifteen years of experience teaching mathematics
to students from primary to Year 12. She was a member of the
committee that drafted the current Queensland Mathematics B and C syllabuses and is a Mathematics B panellist of many years experience. Before entering the teaching profession, Lyn worked
in the field of statistical analysis.
Lyn has discovered, through investigation, what it means to teach problem solving, numeracy and mathematical literacy, and has successfully applied these methods in her classes. Her work has also focused on the skills and experiences that students need to succeed in various mathematical assessment items, including NAPLAN numeracy tests and QCATs. She has researched the links
between NAPLAN numeracy and literacy as part of a Masters degree and is now undertaking a PhD investigating best practice in NAPLAN numeracy preparation. In addition to running regular workshops for practicing teachers, Lyn has taught pre-service teachers of mathematics.
Lyn is currently developing several publications in mathematics education.
