Setting Up the Writing Environment

  • effective use of computers and other technology
  • how to support writers with quality literature
  • creating a sense of community
  • valuing risk taking as writers

  • making learning visible (using anchor charts)
  • creating authentic contexts for writing
  • assisting students to develop writing stamina

About the Presenter

Alan Wright, is an education consultant who has worked extensively in the United States and Australia, promoting best practice in primary and secondary schools and at a systems level. Based in New York for almost six years, Alan worked in more than 100 primary, middle and high schools providing support for teachers, school districts, regions and school leadership teams effecting improved
learning outcomes for students in literacy. Working with
the New York Board of Education he provided training for literacy coaches for NYC schools, writing curriculum resources, producing instructional videos and providing professional development institutes for teachers across the city.
More recently he has presented at conferences in Pittsburgh (NCTE, National conference for Teachers of English), Saratoga (International Reading Association Conference) and in Darwin (ALEA Conference).
As an educator within the Victorian school system Alan worked as a classroom teacher, staff developer, regional consultant and school administrator (Assistant Principal and Principal).
Alan is the author of 'Igniting Writing- When A Teacher Writes' and a contributing author to Teaching Comprehension, (Aussie Interactive) a professional development course on CD-ROMs for grades K-9 teachers. Alan was a contributing author for New York City Secondary Schools Handbooks for Adolescent Learners Series. His writing focused on developing 'Quality Conversations' in classrooms. He is the author of three musicals.
During the International Year of literacy he was the recipient of a national award for his contribution to community literacy for establishing the highly acclaimed Tooradin Writers Week.
