Analysing the Language of VCE English Media and Film Texts

Event Information 6 PD hrs DOWNLOAD BROCHURE This highly interactive workshop is aimed at VCE English teachers both of Years 11 and 12 who seek to refine, develop and deepen their skills of teaching key analytical skills to their students. This is an area of growing importance to ultimate student success, especially when one examines the developments and directions apparent in the final VCE English exam since 2008. It recognises that the VCE English Design explicitly requires students to not only be able to analyse the persuasive language of media texts, but also the intentional construction of print and visual texts for study as part of the Reading and Responding Area of Study. It will be especially relevant to new and inexperienced teachers, as well as teams of teachers from schools. This will be a dynamic workshop with an emphasis on presenting and identifying practical classroom strategies. Areas to be covered include: Detailed exploration of what aspects of set print literary texts ought to be analysed Detailed examination of what aspects of set film texts ought to be analysed Consideration of how students ought to be able to demonstrate such an analytical capacity in their text response essays Detailed exploration of what actually constitutes language analysis in Area of Study 3, and the importance of focusing on analysis as opposed to evaluation Consideration of strategic ways in which to develop the skills of language analysis in students over Years 11 and 12 Consideration of how best to prepare students to maximise their performance in exams when utilising these skills Opportunities to share different approaches and strategies

About the Presenter Ross Huggard is a well-known and highly regarded teacher of senior English. He has had vast experience in teaching VCE English from its inception, and has written an array of VCE English texts. He is the consulting editor for the widely-used Insight English for Year 12 and Insight English for Year 11. He also writes other articles for publication in various education journals, and extensively lectures VCE English students around the state, around Melbourne and regionally, and delivers many professional development presentations to teachers each year. Ross has been a Year 12 Examiner for well over 20 years, and is a Senior Assessor for VCE English. He has also been a member of VCE Accreditation Committees for VCE English.
