This interactive workshop will focus on the new style of exam as communicated by VCAA earlier this year. It will draw on the presenter's knowledge of the Study Design as well as information gleaned from discussions with various experienced teachers over the course of the year. To this end, the core elements of the Study Design will be identified for the purposes of assessment.

There will be opportunities to discuss the various sections of the new examination with a view to preparing students for each section of the paper. Participants will be encouraged to become involved at this point by sharing their ideas including their own thoughts as to the ways they are helping their students achieve to the best of their ability.

Other areas to be covered will include:

• Examination criteria for marking.
  
• Exploration of strategies for completion of each section of the paper successfully.
  
• Some ways to help your students be more “exam smart” on the day.

As the official Assessment Handbook will be referred to teachers are asked to bring the Study Design as well as the Assessment Handbook for this purpose.

About the Presenter

Sara Wawer is a highly experienced secondary teacher currently teaching English Language Units 3 &4. She has presented at a wide array of seminars for her peers as well as VCE students and has taught Linguistics at both undergraduate and graduate level at Deakin University. She has authored the Course Study for Distance Education Victoria and co-authored practice English Language exams for VATE. She recently coauthored a chapter which appears in the Cambridge University Press Publication published in 2010 entitled “Why do English Language?”. In recent years Sara's students have enjoyed very good results in the November exams - a testament to her knowledge and understanding of the English Language Study Design.
