This workshop is aimed at late Primary and Secondary teachers. It provides a variety of innovative approaches to the development of the Australian English Curriculum. It is designed to create in students an appreciation of the importance, power and beauty of language through the utilization of challenging but engaging activities.


Content

  • Sample lessons across levels 5 - 10 that target the Australian Curriculum elaborations
  • Strategies to make the grammar and punctuation standards active and exciting
  • Stimulating ways to drive language improvement
  • Using real writing situations to engage students to reach the achievement standards
  • Utilising technology to stimulate better expression and study its effects on language
  • Using drama to aid literacy improvement
  • Strategies to improve confidence in orals and utilizing oral work to improve literacy

About the Presenter

Ron Thomas has taught literacy, English Literature and Drama for over 20 years. He has been English Head and Head of Compensatory Education as well as Head of Curriculum Innovation and a Flexible Learning Coach. He was Learning Technologies Head for seven years. Ron brings this background to bear upon the teaching of expression skills, both written and oral, providing a diverse range of strategies to motivate and engage students to reach greater heights. A Gold Level Toastmaster he has a keen insight into oral skill acquisition and its importance in developing the written word. He is a keen student of and long supporter of an Australian English Curriculum
