Whichever way you look at it if there was ever going to be the one area of the curriculum that was a perfect fit for ICT then it would have to be science. From searching and sourcing information to communicating and sharing results and findings, from interacting with animations to recording movies, from classification to modelling, from data collection to gaming, computers and associated ICT can make your science classes come alive. This session will explore a range of approaches, websites and activities that can be used in science classrooms.

In this session you will:

  • Learn how to locate and share some of the best online science resources
  • Explore how Web 2.0 spaces can be used to enhance science learning
  • Learn how to use a range of common software applications to enhance science learning
  • Explore how the use of digital cameras including digital microscopes in can significantly enhance science teaching

  • Consider the place of games and gaming as they relate to science

About the Presenter

Having spent more than 30 years as a teacher John Pearce now runs his own education consultancy.
John has had an ongoing interest in the use of ICT across the curriculum. This interest was recognized with a Microsoft Innovative Teachers Award and a VITTA Outstanding Teacher Award.
As well as having an ongoing interest in the use of IWBs in the classroom, John has also been particularly interested in the use of blogs, wikis, podcasts and related social software in educational settings, co-authoring Technology

This workshop takes a fresh look at understanding the role and importance of the visual arts in brain growth and cognitive function.

Why teach art! - Discussion around evidence-based outcomes for learning; its important role in human development, the need for schools to expose students to art and the quality of lifetime experience.

About the Presenter

Sally Sudweeks has always had a passion for art; providing innovative projects to support a diversity of settings. Apart from her personal artistic output, she has pioneered projects within the Victorian Education Department - from a mobile art truck in the Western District to workplace learning, creating productive industry within Special Education. She has developed art programs in disadvantaged schools, promoting skills, pride and realising untapped potential. Within her role of understanding marginalised communities, visual learning has been a significant tool, supporting her interaction with her clients and providing a unique element to her award winning community/ parent engagement programs. Sally is an energetic presenter, with enthusiasm for creative solutions!

Effective Practices in the Writing Classroom

About the Presenter

Alan Wright, is an education consultant who has worked extensively in the United States and Australia, promoting best practice in primary and secondary schools and at a systems level. Based in New York for almost six years, Alan worked in more than 100 primary, middle and high schools providing support for teachers, school districts, regions and school leadership teams effecting improved
learning outcomes for students in literacy. Working with
the New York Board of Education he provided training for literacy coaches for NYC schools, writing curriculum resources, producing instructional videos and providing professional development institutes for teachers across the city.
More recently he has presented at conferences in Pittsburgh (NCTE, National conference for Teachers of English), Saratoga (International Reading Association Conference) and in Darwin (ALEA Conference).
As an educator within the Victorian school system Alan worked as a classroom teacher, staff developer, regional consultant and school administrator (Assistant Principal and Principal).
Alan is the author of 'Igniting Writing- When A Teacher Writes' and a contributing author to Teaching Comprehension, (Aussie Interactive) a professional development course on CD-ROMs for grades K-9 teachers. Alan was a contributing author for New York City Secondary Schools Handbooks for Adolescent Learners Series. His writing focused on developing 'Quality Conversations' in classrooms. He is the author of three musicals.
During the International Year of literacy he was the recipient of a national award for his contribution to community literacy for establishing the highly acclaimed Tooradin Writers Week.

During this professional learning session, participants will work with a range of technologies that are readily available for use in the classroom.
This hands-on workshop will allow teachers to experience the way that software and strategies, such as OneNote, Google Earth, digital storytelling, animation tools, Web 2.0 technology and screen capturing tools for effective feedback, can be used to enhance learning in literacy.


About the Presenter

Natalie Morrissey is an ICT Education Specialist and a former school teacher/ICT Coordinator. In her current role Natalie works with schools and teachers Australia wide on the integration of ICT into all areas of the curriculum by ensuring that schools are effectively
incorporating this into their planning and teaching. She has presented at numerous conferences Australia wide and works closely with Microsoft Partners in Learning Australia and the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. Natalie believes that it is essential for teachers to incorporate technology into their teaching as this is fundamental to student learning in the 21st century. She believes that teachers need to provide students with contemporary learning environments that foster rich experiences and enable the best learning for every student.
