Art therapy uses the creative process of art making to improve and enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-being of students. It is based on the belief that the creative process involved in artistic self-expression helps children to resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behaviour, reduce stress, increase self-esteem and develop awareness.
Art therapy is an effective modality to use with students because it invites them to creatively construct their own story in safe and supported ways. This workshop will assist participants to gather information and develop a more comprehensive understanding of art therapy and how it can be used with children and adolescents.
The workshop will present an overview of art therapy and will offer the opportunity for participants to discuss and experience the use and relevance of using art materials. It will begin with an understanding of what art therapy is, how it can be used and how different art materials may impact on what a child or adolescent is feeling.
To support this overview, a presentation of a young child's work in an art therapy context will be understood from a clinical perspective, exploring his abuse through the art process. Throughout the day, the workshop will be supported by an experiential component where participants will have first hand experience of using art materials.

About the Presenter
Camille McDonald BEd, GradDip(Ed), MA(ATh), AdvDipGestaltTherapy, ClinMGANZ, AThR, PACFA reg.
Camille is an experienced educator, registered art therapist, and psychotherapist. She was employed by the Education Department for 17 years as a Teacher, Consultant and the Student Welfare Coordinator for a large school in the Northern Metropolitan Region.
Camille is currently Director of Student Services and a faculty member of Gestalt Therapy Australia. She previously taught Art Therapy to post graduate students at LaTrobe University for 7 years. She currently works in private practice at Aquifer Counselling and Psychotherapy providing psychotherapy and art therapy to children, young people and adults. She recently worked for a community based organisation providing art therapy for children who had experienced sexual abuse and prior to this worked as an art therapist in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility.
She has experience working with children, young people and adults in areas including trauma, abuse, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, grief and loss. Camille is deeply committed to providing training that is stimulating and experiential in nature.
