The workshop will show how innovation in provision for teachers of students with disabilities has altered perception and practice about how students with a cognitive impairment learn.
It will outline the ABLES research, the development of the assessment tools, the curriculum and the pedagogical advice that makes up the ABLES suite.
The ABLES curriculum innovation is a first for Australia, and a real opportunity to include students with disabilities and additional learning needs in a curriculum continuum.
It also responds to the Disability Discrimination Standards for Education responsibility to provide opportunities for all students to learn on the same basis as their peers.

About the Presenter
Karen Underwood is the Victorian Department of Education and Training’s Manager, Participation, Achievement and Transitions. She worked with University of Melbourne’s Graduate School of Education’s team to develop new assessment practices for students with disabilities and extend these to all Victorian schools via the ABLES materials. Karen led research into the development of curriculum that recognizes the learning of all students. In the past she has been a teacher, curriculum writer and high-stakes test developer.
