Being a year level coordinator can often be a misunderstood role in schools.Teacher’s can often refer difficult students to the office for support as the students become too disruptive to the class and see the co-ordinator as the person with authority in the school who supports discipline. The year level co-ordinator in fact is a third party intervention where a new person objectively attempts to work out the factors that are driving the behaviours of concern with a focus on putting in a in tervention that will reduce the difficulties, address the learning needs of the student and help the student and teacher to manage in the classroom. Often a solution focussed support for both student and teacher is more effective than providing consequences and ‘ disciplining ‘ a student alone. If you are stuck rescuing teachers from challenging students, and what to put more effective strategies in place so that the dynamic will change, then this PD is designed for you. The professional development will offer a range of skills and tools that can be used to assist YLC more effectively address the causes and factors that lead to office referrals and rebuild relationships between students and teachers.

About the Presenter

Emma McCarthy has specialised skills in functional analy sis of challenging behaviour, educational case management and the connection between best practise welfare and education. Having worked to establish the Berry Street School in early days as Principal, she has strong leadership skills and experience in working with disengaged young people. She works as project manager for Hands On Learning Australia where she trains and coaches a range of professionals to manage disengaged students, complex special needs and disability.
