Booking Conditions

No applications for this program will be accepted after all vacancies have been filled. Unsuccessful applicants will have their monies refunded in full. Cancellation prior to two weeks before the program date (cut-off date) will incur a 15% service charge per applicant. This program will be payable in full for cancellations made on or after the cut-off date or for failure to attend the program. All cancellations must be in writing and emailed to us. In the event of insufficient applications this program will not proceed and registration monies be fully refunded. In the event of this program being cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances registration monies only will be refunded as Critical Agendas will not accept liability for the payment of any other associated costs. AI for efficient, engaging and creative teaching

In the last two years there has been a lot of hype around ChatGPT and similar, large language model (LLM) AI tools that can generate text from a typed or spoken prompt. That can be really useful, but there are so many other new curious and useful applications of AI technology, that teachers can use to take their teaching creativity to the next level.

This workshop is a chance to some time out to explore (and play with) some fun, interesting and emerging AI tools that will make teaching more effective and enjoyable—both for students and teachers.

Some highlights will include learning to use AI tools to:

– generate realistic ‘photographs’, cartoon characters, black-line drawings and other images to make PowerPoint slides, tests, and worksheets more interesting and engaging.

– create subject-specific songs (rap, pop, R&B, country, etc.) to set a mood and context while students are entering the classroom. Write your own lyrics or generate them using the AI. (They sound incredible, too).

– animate the eyes and mouth of a still image to make it more interesting.

– speed up the process of providing specific, written feedback on student essays.

– perform pixel-perfect edits on your photographs that until recently required expensive software and a steep learning curve (say, with PhotoShop).

– edit a podcast or video by cutting/copying/typing the transcript, and/or remove background noise from the recording.

– find answers to students’ difficult questions quickly, with references to the published source—saving hours of Googling.

– generate high-quality, differentiated quizzes, worksheets, graphic organisers and reading material.

– much, more!

This workshop is more than just be a showbag of random AI tools, however. Each tool will be examined through a pedagogical lens, considering the educational problem it can be used to solve.

Guaranteed to be an enjoyable day, this workshop will make your teaching experience more fun in the months to come.

ANDREW DOUCH is a Victorian teacher, presenter and edTech consultant. He is well known for his innovative approaches to education, which help teachers amplify their impact on student learning by inspiring new thinking about teaching effectively in a technology-rich world. He is also well known for his engaging Biology revision lectures, podcast and Edrolo courses in Victoria, NSW and Queensland.

His ideas and strategies have been adopted by teachers at all levels of education across Australia and the world, and have attracted numerous awards including a Prime Minister’s Award for Quality Schooling, the Victorian Education Excellence Award for Curriculum Innovation, The Microsoft Worldwide Innovative Teacher of the Year, an IMS Global Leadership Award and an Australian College of Educators World Teachers’ Day Award.

He uses AI every day to make his own work more efficient and compelling (and can’t wait to share his most profitable ideas with you!).

James Smith

James Smith was the Head of English, Humanities and the Advanced Learning Program at Alphington Grammar School. He holds a Master of Teaching (Secondary) and a Master of Education (Student Wellbeing), along with a Graduate Certificate in Educational Research, which focused on using digital technologies to teach writing explicitly. James’ research interests extend to the field of artificial intelligence, where he has collaborated with AI engineers to design the two multi-modal, large language model architectures, which are now pending patent approval. James views artificial intelligence as having the potential to reduce burnout in teachers and improve academic outcomes for students, however he firmly believes that any adoption by schools must keep the teachers “in the loop”.
