Booking Conditions

No applications for this program will be accepted after all vacancies have been filled. Unsuccessful applicants will have their monies refunded in full. Cancellation prior to two weeks before the program date (cut-off date) will incur a 15% service charge per applicant. This program will be payable in full for cancellations made on or after the cut-off date or for failure to attend the program. All cancellations must be in writing and emailed to us. In the event of insufficient applications this program will not proceed and registration monies be fully refunded. In the event of this program being cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances registration monies only will be refunded as Critical Agendas will not accept liability for the payment of any other associated costs. Critical Agendas reserves the right to vary the advertised programs prior to commencement. 9.00 am – 10.00 am – Session 1 – Pam Burton – Building Relationships and Routines for Classroom Success

 Unlock the secrets to creating a thriving learning environment!

Starting strong means building authentic, lasting connections with your students while laying down routines that make every class run smoothly. In this session, you’ll explore practical strategies to foster meaningful relationships and establish structured routines that your students can depend on from day one.

10.30 am – 11.30am – Session 2 – Glen Pearsall – Addressing Low-Level Off-Task Behaviour 

  • Non-verbal techniques and low-key interventions for nudging students back to their learning when they are off task.
  • Techniques for getting and holding student attention and engaging reluctant learners
  • Strategies for giving effective instructions and compelling commands – and for making seamless transitions between learning activities.

11.30am – 11.40am – Mini Break

11.40am – 12.40pm – Session 3 – Glen Pearsall – Addressing Higher-Intensity Off Task Behaviour

  • Effective responses for pivoting around resistant or argumentative behaviours and getting students back to their learning.
  • Techniques for turning around class groups whose behaviour has become distracted and disruptive.
  • Differentiating instruction for supporting students who can’t rather than won’t behaviour
  • Techniques for mapping and responding to entrenched and extreme behaviours

In this session, we’ll break down assessment strategies beyond grading. Learn to gauge student progress during each lesson and align your assessments with the Australian and Victorian Curriculum Standards. You’ll leave with practical tools to ensure that every assessment promotes learning, not just measures it.

Glen Pearsall

Glen Pearsall was a Teacher Leader and board member of the Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority. He works throughout the world as an educational consultant. Glen is the author of the best-selling And Gladly Teach (2010)The Literature Toolbox (2014),  Fast and Effective Assessment(2019), Tilting Your Teaching(2020) and Classroom Dynamics (2024) He is the  co-author of Literature for Life (2005) and Work Right (2011.)  His ebook on questioning The Top Ten Strategic Questions for Teachers (2013) was translated into Khmer for Cambodian teachers. Glen is the co-creator of Toon Teach, an animated series on classroom management.

Expertise

Glen specializes in positive behaviour, feedback and questioning, differentiation, coaching and leadership and teacher workload reduction. He has presented for Critical Agendas on a range of subjects including High Impact Teaching Strategies, Positive Classroom Behaviours, Assessment and Feedback, Differentiation and the Brain, Leadership and VCE Literature.

Pam Burton

Pam Burton’s interest, experience and expertise in educating students at all levels is reflected in her broad teaching and consultancy career. She is a celebrated presenter and author who works extensively with students, teachers and organisations in the areas of leadership, brain compatible learning, boys’ education, literacy, gifted education, creative and critical thinking, learning styles, multiple intelligences and cooperative learning. She has been a lecturer in Gifted Education at Deakin University, a presenter in the Bright Sparks and Women in Leadership programs and numerous other programs at Deakin University.
