Flipped Learning

Enhance the human element of teaching.

If you have ever considered flipping your class 2024 is the perfect time to do it!

Before the pandemic, flipped learning was mostly something that only tech-savvy teachers did. Many other teachers saw the value but considered themselves technically incapable. But six lockdowns in 2020 and 2021 proved that you have the skills needed to flip your teaching. Now you just need the strategies!

The rise of AI in 2003 including large language models (like ChatGPT) that students can use to write their assignments for them, is one of the most compelling reason yet to flip your teaching. If students are watching videos or listening to podcasts at home and doing their assignments in class time, it’s much easier to verify that their work is their own.

Plus those advantages of flipped learning that have always existed still do! All teachers want to make their classes engaging, differentiate for all learners and give helpful specific feedback. But lack of time hampers our efforts to do those things. Flipped learning promises to reclaim time both in and out of class.

In this workshop Andrew Douch will demonstrate simple tips, tricks and tools (including some new AI-powered tools), building on the skills you have recently developed, that can be used to make your online (and in-class) teaching more easy, more engaging and more effective. We will consider common pitfalls and how to avoid them, the easiest and best tools to use and strategies for getting student buy-in.

He will also explain his unique flavour of blended learning; an approach that avoids many of the pitfalls of typical flipped learning while still freeing up lots of class time for high impact teaching strategies. It’s a common-sense, easy-to implement hybrid of the classroom teaching we love and the online teaching we know we can do, and it’s sure to improve student learning and engagement.

Andrew Douch

Andrew Douch is an independent education consultant and a teacher with 22 years classroom experience. His use of educational technology, including those used to flip his classes , has won him numerous awards, including an Australian Government Award for Quality Schooling, the Victorian Education Excellence Award for Curriculum Innovation, the Microsoft
Worldwide Innovative Teacher of the Year and an IMS Global Learning Impact Leadership Award. His mantra is “You don’t need to be very good with technology to do very good things with technology”. Rather teachers need a willingness to question their 20th Century paradigms and rethink their roles as educators in a world where information is available on-demand and communication is instantaneous.
