Leadership for Beginners – A workshop for teachers new to leadership positions
Nearly every new leader I meet with throughout my time working in both primary and secondary schools throughout Australia is stressed, tired and just a bit unfocussed.
I often sit in on a meeting where a new leader is dragged from the room for some reason or who says, “I’m sorry I will have to leave I have another meeting to go to!”
I believe that both Secondary and Primary schools have far too many meetings which make leaders unavailable to the teachers and students they lead.
I have even had the joy of watching a meeting where the participants were being trained in how to keep other meetings focussed. The leader was presenting content that she had drawn up in another meeting!
My recommendation is that all leaders in all schools have a meeting in which they HALVE THE NUMBER OF MEETINGS THEY HAVE and see what happens. Randomly draw them out of a hat if they have to!
Failing that, all beginning leaders need to do a day’s PD on
- What leadership is.
- Setting priorities and
- How to build a team
- How to avoid micro-management
- The science of meetings
- The when, where and how of meetings
- Learning how delegation and power-sharing work
- Efficient ways of giving feedback and
- Becoming more managed and focussed.
This is that workshop.
If you are starting a new leadership role, changing schools, thinking of applying for a promotion or just brand new to coordinators or a Year level leadership position, or have a new bunch of leaders in your school this workshop is for you and them.
