Making Writing a less onerous activity: for Beginning and Intermediate EAL students and their teachers

For many EAL students, writing in English is challenging; while for teachers, marking students’ written work is often onerous. In this workshop, participants will explore a variety of simple ways to improve students’ writing so that they feel more confident writing in English, make fewer errors, and are less inclined to use online translators. From the teacher’s perspective we will look at ways to ease the burden of marking writing tasks while still providing rich and meaningful feedback to students, as well as ways to harness the power of technology to improve the writing process for students and teachers.

This is a hands-on workshop, ideally suited to secondary teachers who want to increase student engagement, and participants will come away with a host of new ideas for activities as well as the teaching materials that they will develop during the day. They will need to bring a laptop to be able to participate fully in the workshop.
