Teach Languages like a Linguist
Linguistics is the scientific study of language, and many of the approaches used by linguists are useful in foreign language classrooms, yet they rarely feature in standard textbooks used in primary and secondary courses. This is an approach to language teaching which is particularly good for engaging students who prefer a more analytic style of learning.
In this workshop, participants will explore systematic ways to teach:
- The sounds of the language, and by extension, spelling-sound correspondences
- The words of the language, and the way they are put together and how they relate to the words around them
- The socio-cultural aspects of language such a register and politeness
- The ways in which languages change in place and time
This is a practical workshop and participants will have time to work with Rowena to develop activities that they can use with their classes immediately. Although the examples given in this workshop will come from French, the ideas presented are general in nature and can be applied in most Language classrooms, so teachers of all languages are encouraged to attend.
