The Proficiency Payoff: Sustainable Writing Strategies for the Language Classroom

We often view “student support” and “teacher workload” as competing interests—if we give students more, we have to mark more. But what if the opposite were true?  The premise of this workshop is simple; teacher workload is reduced when student proficiency is increased.

When students possess the scaffolds to write accurately and independently, the “mountain of marking” becomes a manageable hill. In this workshop, we will look at how to break the cycle of rote correction and move toward sustainable writing instruction.

During the day, participants will explore how to:

  • Bridge the Engagement Gap (Years 7-10): Explore creative, low-prep prompts that build confidence and stamina, stopping the “I don’t know what to write” groans before they start.
  • Rethink the Role of AI: Move beyond policing. Learn how to integrate AI tools as rigorous writing partners that support ideation and editing, rather than shortcuts for translation.
  • Target Feedback for Senior Levels: Discover high-impact feedback strategies (suitable for VCE/Senior contexts) that put the cognitive load back on the student, improving their accuracy while saving you hours of correction time.
  • Design for Autonomy: Create a writing culture where students rely on resources and skills, not just the teacher.

** While examples will be drawn from French and EAL contexts, the pedagogical framework applies universally from beginner engagement to senior assessment. You will leave with a customizable digital toolkit and a clear plan to make writing work for everyone.

Unleashing Brilliant Brains: Boys, ADHD & the Power of Connection – Tony Vallance

This has been the best PD I have ever attended. As an ADHD’er myself (undiagnosed), the mother of an ADHD’er 21 yr old with some serious addictions and now teaching for the past few years in the VM space with ADHD students. I have over 25 years of policing and only recently a teacher and feel so privileged that I get to have an impact on these young people. So grateful Tony for the work you do.
