Understanding Anxiety: How the most anxious and vulnerable children can exceed expectations and thrive

“The Orchid and the Dandelion”

Australia along with the rest of the world is facing an ever increasing tide of anxiety, depression and loneliness in more and more children at younger ages than ever before.

This fascinating workshop invites teachers to learn strategies that ground-breaking research shows how the most vulnerable of children can learn how to be the most resilient of adults.

Framed around Dr Thomas Boyce’s seminal book The Orchid & the Dandelion Greg Mitchell details how six parenting practices can be used to guide schools into making students more resilient than you ever thought possible.

Those strategies are…

  1. Creating consistent routines
  2. Expressing love & care
  3. Recognising & honouring the goodness in human differences
  4. Accepting fear and affirming effort
  5. Treading the fine line between protection and provocation
  6. Embracing the power of play

Greg Mitchell survived a childhood surrounded by mental illness, fear and frailty to become someone who now workshops throughout Australia to help schools become more accepting of mental ill health and much more responsive to the needs of both students’ parents and teachers own mental health.

In this workshop he eloquently lays out the roles that both schools and parents need to play in developing children who can thrive in a world of constant change and increasing threat.

This highly innovative workshop invites teachers to explore how we all can enable our children to become more brave rather than less scared.
