Using Feedback and Learning Targets to Improve Student Learning

‘Feedback is probably the best-tested principle in psychology. [It is] … most effective when it is timely, perceived as relevant, meaningful and encouraging, and offers suggestions for improvement that are within a student’s grasp.’ Brown, Bull, & Pendlebury

This workshop will provide evidence-based research and practical strategies to enable participants to establish relevant, student focused learning targets and use a variety of effective learning focused feedback strategies.

Participants will –

  • Use Achievement Standards to develop learning targets that are appropriate for the range of learners in their classrooms
  • Develop strategies that enable all students to identify, monitor and assess their progress
  • Explore evidence-based research that identifies the most effective approaches that teachers can use to give feedback to students
  • Consider the most effective ways for teachers to provide oral feedback
  • Identify the three types of written feedback prompts that can be used to help students understand what is needed for improvement
  • Review effective peer feedback strategies
  • Investigate resources that can be used to provide feedback that moves learning forward
