Karen was a secondary English and Literature teacher for seventeen years, before moving into a regional role as a curriculum consultant and disability coordinator working with schools to better support students with disability and additional learning needs. After six years she moved to the VCAA taking on a test development role, and managed the delivery of the AIM English tests (the precursor to NAPLAN) in Victoria. She followed that with a move into the department writing curriculum which is now mandated, and known as Victorian Curriculum Towards Foundation levels A to D, to support her work in the development of the ABLES assessment tools, a set of nine learning area tools that provide teachers with advice about what students with disability and additional needs can do and need to learn next. This work has been complemented with resources for students with learning difficulties including dyslexia and dyscalculia so teachers can support all learners with learning challenges.
