Richard Andrew

During my twenty-plus years in the classroom – including six as a HoD and over fifteen years as a PD provider – I have always tried to be an out-of-the-box thinker, a questioner of the status quo.

The dominant mantra has always been, Just because ‘everyone’ is doing it doesn’t make ‘it’ the smartest approach!

Two (perhaps unpopular?) observations I’ve made over my three-plus decades in education are:

  1. Too many maths students take very little responsibility for their learning.
  2. There’s a pervading – and somewhat disturbing – assumption that students are capable of successfully learning mathematical procedures without a solid understanding of the concepts upon which those procedures are based.

In response to these observations, the main thrust of my work is to empower maths teachers:

  • to foster agency in students,
  • to enable students to understand concepts before (or while) students gain mastery of procedures upon which those concepts are based,
  • and to bring about agency and understanding in time-efficient ways that are integral to everyday classroom teaching.

Teachers tell me I am a transparent, relatable presenter. Perhaps this is because I claim to have made ‘more mistakes than anyone in the history of teaching’.

I’ve always been fascinated by the craft of teaching maths. I have a knack for presenting large pedagogical ideas in easy-to-follow ways … common sense and feet-on-the-ground ways, and in the absence of edu-babble.
