Teaching Kids with Trauma – Behavioural Health and Trauma Sensitivity

For far too long schools have tried to deal with complex student behaviour under a single administrative technique called “Behaviour Management” which is designed to do, give, or take away privileges that will produce a resulting change in behaviour as soon as possible.

This dominant traditional behaviour management model evolved primarily for stability in a well-known environment with a solid student base.

Today that solid base is rapidly crumbling with behaviour challenges appearing that we have had no training for and no real tools to work with. We try to deal with these issues with a never-ending rotation of professional development without changing the way that we look at behaviour, its causes, and our response to it.

This highly challenging but deeply practical workshop is built around the concept that all behaviour, no matter who does it; is a symptom, is communication, has a function, occurs in patterns, and can be changed.

This requires us to have a clear approach to all of our interactions that aligns

  • rock solid values that include Respect, Safety and Readiness with
  • rules that explain, teach, and demonstrate these values and
  • classroom practices that embody the rules and values that are essential for
  • Mental Management, Behavioural Health and Trauma Sensitivity

This workshop details two operating systems.

Firstly, an exemplary operating structure for all adults who work within the school that personifies best practice in behaviour, mental and trauma competence.

The is system that calls on all of us to

  • Create safety
  • Regulate our nervous systems
  • Build a connected relationship
  • Development a coherent narrative
  • Practice ‘power-with’ strategies
  • Build social emotional and resiliency skills
  • Foster growth.

Secondly a reset operational system called RUMBL enables us to tackle old beliefs that clearly aren’t working, identify new and better ways of approaching issues and forces us to gather data and evidence to make informed and practical decisions.

RUMBL stands for

  • Recognise
  • Understand
  • Manage
  • Build
  • Learn

This system is learned by Administrators, Teachers, Learners and Parents alike as a common approach for when common-sense is absent.

So, if you are ready to RUMBL this is the workshop for your whole school to attend!

Just a big Thank you for giving us the opportunity to attend the Critical Agenda Workshop yesterday.  David presented a great program, lots of handy strategies and he was very engaging and supportive. Highly recommended.  I was very happy we did not have to do any Role play’s.
