Effective collaboration between teachers and teacher assistants
Overview
These workshops will explore current international research relating to how student learning outcomes can be improved through effective teacher-teacher assistant collaboration. Practical activities will help classroom teachers to consider the efficacy of their current practices to determine whether they can make adjustments to the way they plan their lessons and how they collaborate with teacher assistants. Educators in leadership roles will have the opportunity to examine inclusive practices in their school and consider areas for improvement. Teacher assistants will set personal goals for how they can work in partnership with teachers to support the learning of all students. The three sessions will cover the following;
- Overview of research and literature
- Case studies and self-assessment
- Action planning activity
Learning Intentions:
- To explore what research tells us about how effective collaboration between teachers and teacher assistants can positively impact student learning.
- To examine examples of differing ways teachers and teachers collaborate and consider the potential effects of these approaches on teachers, teacher assistants and students.
- To consider how current personal or whole-school practices could be adjusted to improve the way teachers and teacher assistants work together.
Success Criteria:
- Participants will begin to reflect on how the presented research findings can be applied to their role in schools and consider how they might adjust their practices to improve teacher-teacher assistant collaboration.
- Participants will understand how the professional relationship between teachers and teacher assistants has the potential to impact on student learning and staff morale.
- Participants will develop a plan for how to apply research findings to their own context
